Foodie brinksmanship

Mama Squirrel is in San Diego for the week. We have already begun the culinary escalation. Last night after Squirrelly, Jr., and I got home from having excellent ribs at The Barbecue Shop, Mama called to report that she was across the border in Tijuana having wonderful carne asada tacos, one with guacamole and the other with nopalitos and mushrooms.

We won this morning’s round. While Mama was having her made-to-order breakfast at the Embassy Suites, Teh Boy and I were feasting at Buns on the Run. I had a spinach, mushroom, ham, and feta omelet, while Teh Boy had French toast made from fresh homemade bread.

Last time Mama was in San Diego, she ate at a place with amazing pozole. We’ve been working on duplicating that dish ever since. I have a feeling she will be taking her coworker Love Monkey and his wife, Mrs. Love Monkey, there tonight. We headed that off at lunch with a visit to Las Tortugas Deli Mexicana. Of course, Mama was eating an incredible Caribbean salad with fresh mango, papaya, avocado, strawberries, mandarin oranges and what she called “really amazing Jerk chicken”. Grrr.

We have already achieved MAD (Mama-Assured Defeat) because she has launched her ICBM (Irritating Culinary Boasting Missive) telling us that she intends to visit Chino Farms before she returns home. Chino Farms is much beloved by Alice Waters and Jeffrey Steingarten and dozens of the best chefs of southern California. And Mama is going there. Without us. At least she has promised to try to bring samples home.

In the meantime, Teh Boy and I will be doing our best to keep up. We bought two loaves of fresh Buns on the Run bread today. We’re going to use it for patty melts and French toast. I also want to try a Pullman plank version of toad in the hole like Scott Peacock‘s. Next is a trip to Wild Oats to pick up a few things.

Monday night is another La Tourelle cooking demo and dinner. We may go to First Wednesday at Brooks Museum and Brushmark to try Wally Joe’s African-themed menu. Mama’s gonna win this one, but we’re not gonna take it lying down.
